Sidecar Astronauts has arrived, bringing upbeat PowerGum music as an antidote to uncertain times.
Equal parts power pop and bubblegum, plus a healthy dose of weirdness, the debut album “Play Again” draws from a wide range of influences to work its infectious magic. Behind the music and cartoon avatars is Storm DiCostanzo, best know as one half of Paul and Storm; one-quarter of a cappella favorite Da Vinci’s Notebook; and composer of music for projects such as Mystery Science Theater 3000 and The Thrilling Adventure Hour.
Working with producer Christian Cassan (Jonathan Coulton’s “Solid State”; “Passing Strange”), “Play Again” is chock full of earworm melodies and hooks, soaring harmonies, clever wordplay, and a rocking rich sound all its own.
In addition to Storm and Christian, “Play Again” features musical contributions from Paul Sabourin (Paul and Storm), Jonathan Coulton, Mauro Refosco (David Byrne, Red Hot Chili Peppers), Jon Spurney, Bennett Paster, Thad DeBrok, Noah Hoffeld, Jasmine Francescon, and the Sidehorn Saxtronauts (Andrew Gutauskas, John Lake, and Robert Edwards).
Christian and Storm thank John Peluso at Peluso Microphone Lab and Joe Waltz at Eventide.
The music is also the soundtrack to a series of adventures of a fictional band, the Sidecar Astronauts, in the tradition of The Archies and Gorillaz. They’re a group of ordinary people flung through space and time to save the universe through sweet licks and hard rocking:
